Coping with Relocation: Self-Care Tips for Women When Moving Homes

Relocating can be a significant life change, whether one does it by choice or chance. The process is often accompanied by a mix of excitement and anxiety. The challenge is bigger for women who handle multiple responsibilities. At the same time, the burden of “settling in” often falls on them.

For them, prioritizing self-care during this transition is essential. Unfortunately, data published in the IFA Magazine suggests that women don’t do that much for self-care. Women in the UK consider mental wellness their top priority, but only 39% of them invest in it. Similarly, only 35% of women do things for physical wellness.

Self-care during relocation may seem like a lot of extra load. However, we have a list of actionable tips to help women manage the stress of moving homes without missing out on their well-being.

Establish a Realistic Routine

Self-care is not just about doing the right things, but also being consistent with them. Everyday Health suggests creating a self-care routine that works well with your schedule, needs, and preferences. You must also be willing to tweak it from time to time according to your current situation.

For example, what may be self-care in daily life may be less of it during the upheaval of moving. Think of realistic steps and timelines to create an actionable routine. You can engage in meditation or mindfulness practises to stay grounded amidst the chaos. It is easy to steal a few moments for deep breathing to reduce stress levels.

Try journaling as writing down your feelings can provide clarity and give you an emotional outlet. By doing this, you will be in a better place to process the changes and anxieties related to relocation.

Stay Physically Active

Moving homes does involve a lot of physical work, but it isn’t exactly exercise to stay fit and healthy. Regular physical activity is beneficial for your physical health and mental well-being. It helps alleviate stress and anxiety with the release of endorphins.

If being regular at the gym sounds like a lot of work when moving homes, you can opt for other activities. Yoga, brisk walking, and dancing can be done anywhere, so you can easily integrate them into your current routine.

Besides choosing the right exercises, you must also set realistic goals. Aiming for 30 minutes of activity each day is a good start. You can consider breaking it into smaller sessions if a single session seems impossible.

What are some quick self-care activities you can do when packing for the move?

Moving can be exhausting, and it is hard to imagine exercising when packing. However, you can do some quick self-care activities on the go. Take short breaks to stretch and practice deep breathing exercises. Enjoying a cup of tea with calming music is also a form of self-care.

Prioritize Sleep and Nutrition

According to the Sleep Foundation, women require more sleep than their male counterparts. They are also at a 40% higher risk of encountering insomnia. Factors like menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause lead to sleep deprivation in women. The stress of moving homes can also contribute to it.

Even when you struggle to handle the logistics of relocation, ensure that you get at least 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. It will help your body recover from the physical and mental toll of moving. Also, more sleep reduces stress and improves focus.

Eating balanced meals is equally important to keep your energy levels on track. You can prepare meals in advance to save time and maintain healthy eating habits during the hectic moving process.

Give Big Decisions a Break

Relocation can be disruptive for women as settling into a new home requires time, effort, and patience. If you have a big decision to make, such as a job change or parenting, give yourself some time after the move. The last thing you want is tiring and stressing yourself out due to multiple things to handle.

Suppose you and your partner want to start a family in the new house. Pause the decision for at least a few months. An intrauterine device (IUD) is an effective birth control method as it offers long-term protection. Moreover, fertility is restored after removing the IUD. However, be mindful about the IUD you use.

According to TorHoerman Law, women opting for non-hormonal IUDs should avoid Paragard. The device is associated with risks like breakage, internal bleeding, and organ damage during removal. Many affected women have even filed lawsuits against Teva Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Paragard.

The Paragard IUD lawsuit settlement amounts can vary between $10,000 and $400,000. The actual compensation depends on the severity of the damage caused by the device.

Talk to your doctor and seek recommendations for the best contraceptive to prevent pregnancy until you feel ready. Once you overcome the stress of relocation, you can go ahead to fulfil your parenting dreams.

Is it normal to experience anxiety while relocating?

Yes, feeling anxious about moving is absolutely normal. Relocating to a new place is a big life change that brings uncertainty and requires extensive adjustment. You can adapt by acknowledging these feelings and taking things slowly. Avoid planning any major life change at this point.

Build a Support Network

Moving can feel isolating, specifically in a new environment. You may find yourself in a city or locality where you know no one. Healthline notes that relocation depression is a real thing, and it can affect mental health. Watch out for symptoms like feelings of sadness, exhaustion, and lack of pleasure.

Fortunately, it is possible to deal with relocation depression with a support system in place. Reach out and share your feelings with those close to you. Talking about your experiences can reduce feelings of loneliness and provide comfort.

Look for local community groups or clubs related to your interests. You can foster new friendships and create a sense of belonging by engaging with others.

How can I deal with feelings of isolation after moving?

Moving to a new place often makes you feel lonely as you miss neighbors and friends. To combat loneliness, stay in touch with friends or family via video calls or messages. Try meeting people and making new friends by participating in local community events. You can also join hobby groups in your new area.

Women struggle with life transitions, and moving to a new home is a big leap. You may have a hard time physically and emotionally. A little extra effort with self-care can make things easy for you. Take things slowly and give yourself time to adjust to the new environment.
