You'll agree that jewelries are great pieces to own; they not only elevate your look, but they can hold immense value depending on their type. But anyone who owns a fair number of jewelry knows to fear one thing—the tangled mess.

Yes, your favorite necklace might be sturdy. But would it survive a bumpy car ride crammed between your socks and a rogue spatula?

Moving can be stressful, especially when you have to pack delicate items like jewelry. However, with a bit of planning and a few clever tricks, you can ensure your precious pieces make it to your new home safe and sound.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to pack jewelry for moving to help you relocate with ease:

Ready Your Supplies

Before you turn your jewelry box upside-down, ensure you have all the necessary supplies.

Using the right supplies to pack your jewelry is essential. It protects it from damage, whether you're handling it yourself or working with a moving company. Moreover, it also keeps your jewelry organized and easily accessible while ensuring its security during a move.

Tools like bubble wrap, foam sheets, and jewelry boxes provide necessary cushioning. While ziplock bags and cardboard tubes or straws prevent tangling and scratching.

Supplies you need to gather include:

  • Jewelry boxes or organizers
  • Small ziplock bags
  • Bubble wrap or foam sheets
  • Packing paper or tissue paper
  • Cardboard tubes or straws
  • Clean cloth
  • Permanent marker
  • Sturdy box for transport

Sort and Clean Your Jewelry

Hold onto your tiaras; before the moving company whisks away your jewelry box, you need to ensure they are well sorted.

Moving is a great chance to separate the stars among your jewelry and rediscover hidden ones. Believe it or not, not every piece needs to make the move. Pick out pieces that you can donate or gift.

You should consider sentimental value, everyday wear, and special occasion pieces. Identify your most valuable or delicate pieces. These may require extra TLC during packing.

Use a clean cloth to gently wipe down your jewelry. For more thorough cleaning, follow the care instructions specific to each piece.

Packing Each Jewelry Piece

Let's walk through a step-by-step process for each piece of jewelry in your possession.

Necklaces

These jewelries are notorious for tangling. Imagine untangling a bird's nest of necklaces after the move. That is not fun at all!

Packing your necklaces neatly prevents them from becoming a sparkly knot that would make even Houdini cry.

However, the way you pack your necklaces differs from how to pack earrings.

Here's how you can do this:

  • Use straws or cardboard tubes: Thread each delicate necklace or chain through a paper straw or a small cardboard tube and clasp it. It keeps the chain straight and untangled. Wrap the necklace in tissue paper or secure it in a ziplock bag.
  • Individual ziplock bags: Place each necklace in its own small ziplock bag. Leave a bit of the chain hanging out to avoid tangling. For thicker chains or chunky bracelets, individually wrap them in bubble wrap or tissue paper.

Pro tip: A plastic straw may be more readily accessible, but do not use these. They do not offer the same level of grip that a paper straw does, and your efforts and time threading your necklace around one would be futile as your necklaces slip off, leading to a tangled mess.

Rings and Earrings

An easy way to pack rings and earrings is to stuff them in a box, but these pieces of jewelry come in different shapes and configurations.

Dangling or chandelier earrings can get tangled up in their own many loops or that of another earring. Simple rings and loose earrings, especially studs, also have a knack for disappearing into the packing abyss.

However, special cases and organizers keep them safely contained. Rings and earrings can be packed in a variety of ways to keep them secure.

Here's how to pack earrings for moving:

  • Egg cartons or pill organizers: These everyday items make excellent organizers for rings and earrings. Place rings and earrings in each compartment of the pill organizer or cup of the egg carton. Then, fill the cups or compartments with a piece of crumpled tissue paper. Close the egg carton and tape it together so the rings or earrings are not displaced when there are road bumps.
  • Button method for earrings: You can also fasten pairs of earrings through the holes of a button. This keeps them together and easy to find.
  • Use a foam sheet: You can pierce each earring through the foam sheet. Secure them with their hooks and wrap them in packing paper before boxing them.

Bracelets and Bangles

An often overlooked aspect of packing jewelry for moving is the secure packing of bracelets and bangles.

Although bracelets and bangles are less prone to tangling, they still need careful packing. Bracelets and bangles are often made of fragile materials that either sustain scratches, cracks, or breaks.

For this reason, you need to pack them in such a way they get to your destination in one piece.

  • Wrap individually: Use bubble wrap or wrapping paper to cover each bracelet or bangle. Secure with a piece of tape.
  • Use small boxes: If you have the original boxes, they're perfect for transport. If not, small jewelry boxes or even small cardboard boxes will do.

How to Pack Heavier Pieces Carefully

Bumpy roads and jostling boxes can be a recipe for disaster for delicate pieces.

Padding your jewelry with tissue paper, bubble wrap, or those fluffy packing peanuts creates a soft, protective environment for your precious gems.

For larger and heavier pieces, like statement necklaces or watches, you'll need to provide extra care.

  • Wrap in bubble wrap: Wrap each piece individually in bubble wrap, securing it with tape.
  • Use sturdy boxes: Place these wrapped items in sturdy boxes to prevent crushing.

Label and Organize

Packing jewelry for moving requires careful and separate consideration, not just to transport it safely but also to organize it for easy access.

Labeling is key to keeping everything organized.

  • Label bags and boxes: Use a permanent marker to label each bag or box with its contents.
  • Group similar items: Place jewelry pieces of similar type and structure together in larger boxes. For example, keep all your necklaces in one box and rings in another. Again, this depends on how many pieces of jewelry you have.

Pro tip:

If you have highly valuable jewelry like heirlooms and there's a risk of them being stolen, you can 'mislabel' them. For instance, you can label a box of diamond pieces 'decorative pebbles'. This will help keep off thieves, who will be able to ascertain the value of the box.

Choose a Safe Transport Method

A critical step in packing jewelry well is its safe transportation. After securing each piece, you can either:

  • Carry it with you. If possible, keep your jewelry with you during the move rather than putting it in a moving truck. Doing this reduces the risk of loss or damage. Or,
  • Use a Lockable Box. Place your packed jewelry in a lockable box or a small safe for added security.
