The Courtyard is the product and master piece that was born out of creativity, designed by De Rosee Sa. The building site is located in a row of 16 garages, and the job was to tear down one existing garage and build a 2 bedroom home in it's stead.
There were many complications of the design including window placement. There was very limited walls that would allow for windows, so in order to maintain a bright and airy home, there are large skylights in each room to let in the light. And in addition, they created an internal courtyard in the center of the home and and where possible, walls of windows looking out into the courtyard. Hence, the name of the home!
A clean and modern aesthetic is achieved by minimal trim work, flat smooth walls, with black window frames and wardware, with herringbone wooden flooring. Textures and color tones were used to make the space come to life, yet without losing the clean modern vibe. Frameless and cleanlined, glossy white cabinets complete the modern look and ensure the home is well catered to the minimalist life style.
The exterior of the home, and feature walls and doors were created by cladding of two by two cedar bringing in tone and texture from the outside in, and an extremely unique feeling of the home, when it is juxtaposed against the white walls.
We love the idea and concept around this home. It's through and through built with sustainability in mind, and minimal foot print and impact. The idea of taking a under valued and hard to use space, and turning it into a wonderful compact and beautiful home that is desirable is amazing. They did a great job of making it feel modern, but not sterile, while still making it feel livable!
We do think the layout did have to compromise a little in order to achieve the courtyard and make appealing to live in that space, but C'est La Vie.
